Tour guide Mike Dean, who takes on the role of Witchfinder General, said: “Dressing up adds to the macabre of the night and ensures that the guides are very much in character.

“The statistics for our tours go back several years and although they have always been popular, more recently we have seen a noticeable upturn.

“I think it is in part due to the fact that people often get trapped into a world of gloom and want to raise their spirits - forgive the pun.”

The red barn murder, Abbey atrocities and the story of Skinner Street are just some of the highlights of the tour.

The guides will also be taking audiences to never before visited spooky spots this Halloween season and the tours will continue on Friday evenings until March 2023.

Each ghostly walk lasts 90 minutes and customers will begin their experience outside Marks and Spencer in Buttermarket.

Tickets are being sold at £7.50 and more information can be found here.

Marketing officer John Saunders said: “It’s a real mixture, especially around Halloween when several customers decide to dress up in their own ghoulish outfits.

“Then we have those who are attracted by historic sinister events and those who just want a night of fun.”
