Traditional sign designer Wayne Tanswell spotted working on sign for upcoming Cornish Bakery branch in Bury St Edmunds
A Great Cornard-based signwriter has been commissioned to paint the front of a bakery set to open in Bury St Edmunds later this month.
SuffolkNews spoke to Wayne Tanswell this morning while he went to work outside the new Cornish Bakery branch.
The branch is moving into an empty unit in the former Palmers building in Buttermarket.
It is due to open on March 20.
Mr Tanswell has been painting signs for almost 60 years, and prides himself on his old-school designs.
He says the Cornish Bakery was hoping to give their Bury outlet a traditional look.
Mr Tanswell said: "The Cornish Bakery needed someone local up here.
"It's a rendered building, so the sign's not on flat wood – which is easier to put a sticker on.
"They [the Cornish Bakery] want to give it a hand look, keep it traditional.
"You'll find that, when shops are doing something handmade – like their food – they like to keep it consistent."
He said he felt privileged for being brought in to do the job: "There's only 300-or-so signwriters left in the country now, so I'm really lucky to keep busy with it."
