Travellers who set up on Tollgate Playing Fields at the Howard Estate in Bury St Edmunds served notice to leave

Travellers who moved onto playing fields on a Bury St Edmunds estate have been served a notice to leave the site by tomorrow morning.

Nine caravans, three motorhomes and nine cars set up on the Tollgate Playing Fields at the Howard Estate on Tuesday.

Today, a West Suffolk Council spokesperson said: “We are following a legal process to return the field to community use and have this morning served a Section 77 notice given the Travellers until 11am tomorrow to leave the site.

“We have also made arrangement to collect their rubbish while Traveller welfare have visited to check the families’ needs including the proper disposal of any waste.”

On Wednesday, a resident told SuffolkNews they were concerned about the situation and questioned how the Travellers had managed to make their way onto the fields.

Last month, Travellers were on Stoke-by-Clare Playing Field as well as land off Lady Miriam Way, on the Moreton Hall Estate, in Bury St Edmunds, and the Haughley George V Playing Field.
