University of Suffolk announces honorary awards

The University of Suffolk has announced the recipients of honorary awards which will be presented at graduation ceremonies next month.

The awards recognise contributions to the educational or cultural well-being of society, in business, industry, commerce or enterprise, for academic distinction, public or community service or contribution to the university.

Richard Carter, former West Suffolk College chairman of governors, will receive an honorary doctorate.

He said: “I feel that the University of Suffolk is bestowing on me a great honour. It was very unexpected.”

Having devoted over 40 years as a voluntary fund-raiser and charity campaigner, Gina Long will become an honorary fellow.

“To say I was ‘over the moon’ delighted when I received the letter would be an understatement,” said Gina.

Scott Russell, founder and chief executive of coffee brand Paddy and Scotts, will become an honorary fellow.

He said: “It goes to show hard work, determination, self-belief and ambition can drive you forward.”

Madeleine Jackaman, who founded Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare (SESAW), which cares for and re-homes injured and homeless animals, will also become an honorary fellow.

She said: “I am proud to accept the award on behalf of the many volunteers that help at SESAW.”
