Dove release to observe Action Mesothelioma Day in Bury St Edmunds

St. Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds saw more than two hundred people observe Action Mesothelioma Day on July 1.

The annual commemoration remembers those who have been lost to mesothelioma, a respiratory and lung disease caused by exposure to asbestos fibres.

Members of the Anglia Asbestos Diseases Support Group and Mesothelioma UK attended from Bury, Norwich, Brentwood and Leicester and joined with the St. Edmundsbury community and colleagues to remember close friends and family members who died to the disease, which has no known cure.

A service of reflection was conducted by Bishop Graeme Knowles, the Acting Dean, who welcomed all visitors and the sermon was given by Canon Chris Andrews reflected on the importance of community, communication and caring.

Following the Service a symbolic release of white doves took place in the Cloister Garden, where words of hope and encouragement were spoken accompanied by poignant interludes of music and poetry.

This is the second year that St. Edmundsbury Cathedral has hosted the event.
