Thelnetham thatch fire sees huge fire crew response

A thatched roof fire which was responded to by 10 fire units took place in Thelnetham last night.

The fire at Hill Cottage, in High Street, saw appliances from Diss, Bury St Edmunds, Thetford, Woodbridge, Eye, Ixworth and Newmarket called to the scene.

The call, Just before 7pm, saw a two-metre patch of the roof around the chimney breast of the two-storey cottage alight.

A spokesman for Suffolk Fire, said: "Fire service personnel stripped out thatch from around the breast in order to stop spread. They also damped down the roof and looked for hot spots before a stop was called at 10.01pm.

"The incident was declared closed at 11pm. There were no casualties. There is no information about a cause at this stage."
