Some of National Trust’s Ickworth Estate, near Bury S Edmunds, reopens after flash flooding caused it to close
Some attractions at a National Trust site remain closed today after torrential rain caused ‘significant damage’, but others have reopened.
The Ickworth Estate, in Horringer, near Bury St Edmunds, was shut to the public yesterday due to flash flooding.
The website now says the parkland, gardens, welcome point and Porter's Lodge Café and the Rotunda have reopened.
However, the West Wing remains closed while safety checks of the building are carried out.
“Thank you for your understanding,” the website says.
The West Wing Café will open today at a later time of 12pm. However, the cycle hire, servants’ quarters and gallery (Suffolk Craft Society) will be closed today.
A spokesperson for the estate said the torrential rain yesterday evening overwhelmed the historic drainage system on the main house at Ickworth affecting the electrical and fire safety systems.
“We are still assessing the full extent of the damage so do not yet know what the full cost of any work required,” they said.
They added that there was a small amount of water ingress to the Rotunda and, while it will take a little time to dry out, there is no damage to the collection or state rooms.
Visitors are advised to check the website for updates.
