A university graduate from Bury St Edmunds who struggled with her own identity growing up wants to set up a writers group for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people where they can share ideas and experiences.

Tamika Green, 22, recently graduated with a Writing and Film Studies degree from Anglia Ruskin University and is on the board of Bury St Edmunds for Black Lives.

She said that the group would go beyond just being about writing, and could also be a sounding board for young BAME people growing up in the area who might be struggling with any number of issues.

When she was younger, Tamika struggled with her own identity.

“Growing up, I didn’t feel like I fit in,” she said.

“I didn’t like my skin colour, I didn’t like my hair.

“Even at a young age, at six or seven I wanted to bleach my skin.

“That’s why I like to discuss things with people."

Tamika said she has already reached out for new members.

“I did a general Google search and couldn’t find any black writers which was quite frustrating,” she said.

“I contacted Suffolk Writers Group and they helped me out so I have got a few names from them.”

Tamika wants the group to become a long-term project, but for the immediate future, hopes it could provide a pool of talent from which writers could be plucked for the Bury St Edmunds for Black Lives planned event later this year.
