We tried a wine tasting session at The One Bull in Bury St Edmunds and this is what we thought

'Tis the season to be jolly as they say - and what better way to do so than a wine tasting night at The One Bull pub in Bury St Edmunds.

The pub is part of Gusto Pronto, run by husband and wife David and Roxane Marjoram, who own a number of other pubs and a brewery in the county.

Last night, their latest project, Vino Gusto, run with partner Jake Bennett-Day, saw customers and suppliers invited to The One Bull for a Christmas wine tasting night.

The event was a chance to speak to customers and suppliers, but also an opportunity to market the Vino Gusto brand, which launched an online shop last year and will be opening a new store in Hatter Street early next year.

There was a variety of Proseccos, white, red and sweet wines, and rosés to choose from - 82 in total.

I was lucky enough to have Jake, who will be based at the new shop next year, take me through a couple of the wines on offer.

First up was The Liberator, a South African Chenin Blanc.

I must admit, wine tasting is not my forte, but Jake's knowledge soon made that irrelevant.

The Liberator, Jake said, holds citrus tones but also has toasty, richer characteristics.

The parcels from the wines were selected from two growing sites, the Bottelary Hills and Simonsberg mountains, both in South Africa.

Next up was the Mimetic Red, a wine made by David Seijas, an ex-sommelier at El Bulli, in Catalonia, Spain, at one point known as the 'world's best restaurant'.

The wine had a savoury and fruity flavour with notes of plum, blueberries and a herby hint of mint and thyme in the background.

And Jake also pointed out it's been designed to go with food - what more could you want at Christmas?

As it was a Monday night, I tried just one more wine, the Chambers Rosewood Rutherglen Muscat, made in Rutherglen, Victoria, Australia.

The vegetarian/vegan sweet wine was rich, yet zesty and balanced. A perfect after dinner wine.

Overall, I would say the tasting night was as much about the experience as the wines.

The One Bull can always be relied upon for a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and with a professional level of service.

If Jake's knowledge of and enthusiasm for the wines was anything to go by, Vino Gusto's new shop will be a rip-roaring success as well.
