Pride party to take place at Constitutional Club in Guildhall Street Bury St Edmunds on June 30, 2023

The new chairperson of the Constitutional Club in Bury St Edmunds is inviting people to celebrate pride month at the venue in Guildhall Street.

A pride party will take place on the evening of Friday, June 30 and organiser Emma Warren, 38, wants LGBTQ+ people, and their allies, to know they are all welcome.

Emma, who works for a charity, when not volunteering as the Constitutional Club chairperson, believes it is important that the town recognises pride month, which runs throughout June.

She said: “There is local support for pride in Bury, but people are not shouting about it and there is a need for it (the party).

“I don’t know of any other pride events in Bury and we want to show the LGBTQ+ community that the Constitutional Club is a safe, non judgemental space, people can wear whatever they want, from trainers to sequins.

“We are current, not stuck in the dark ages, and we want people to come and be a part of it.”

Emma, who lives in the town centre, added: “The party is open to everybody, you don’t have to be gay to get through the door.”

Popular, local drag queen Knuckle Sandwich will be the star attraction at the party and other drag acts have been in touch with Emma to show their support.

She said: “The local drag artists seem to agree with me that Bury doesn’t seem to have much of a LGBTQ+ scene.”

Now Emma, who has been in post for under a month, hopes there may be scope to organise more events for the community in the future, if the party is as successful as she hopes it will be.

She said: “Members of the club are really keen on the idea of the party and have been chatting to me about it, so come along and have a bit of fun, we will be of supportive of whatever you want to be.”
