Barningham villagers, near Bury St Edmunds and Thetford, frustrated over Bardwell Road flooding woes with wellies now the staple footwear

Villagers have said they are beyond frustrated with months-long flooding on a road and wellies have now become the community’s staple footwear.

Hannah Wallis, 32, of Barningham, near Bury St Edmunds and Thetford, has grown tired of the levels of water that constantly build up along Bardwell Road.

The route has regularly flooded since October and she said a recent attempt to sort the issue by Suffolk Highways was not dealt with effectively.

“As soon as it rains, it floods. We’re a smaller village and we get ignored and after having issues for so long due to flooding it is now beyond frustrating,” Hannah said.

“Lots of residents don’t drive and rely on the local shop heavily so wellies are now our staple footwear and it's been so deep this year it often comes up over our wellies.

“The daft thing is they emptied 20 tanker loads of water out last week but dumped it half a mile further up the road into the same drain system. So it just flowed straight back down to that low point where it floods.

“Our local farmers, the Webber family, have kindly helped clear the drains and dug the ditches deeper doing their utmost to help, but with this year being wetter than most it just hasn't cleared.”

In previous cases, cars have been recovered from the road including six in one day in October before warning signs were put up.

Residents even blocked the road off with their own cars to prevent further drivers becoming stuck in flood water.

“I hate to think how many insurance claims have been put through because of flooding here - it’s got to be over hundreds of thousands now,” Hannah said.

“It's always been a problem area and we really need some substantial improvements in the drainage system or I worry it will remain the same for years to come.

“It has always flooded in the area for as long as I can remember and walking to school as a kid you would always get soggy ankles too.”

A spokesperson for Suffolk Highways said: “Last week our contractors attended Bardwell Road, Barningham to clear the surface water flooding, however, they were unable to stop the flow of water.

“The road will remain closed until a full investigation has been completed.”
