A Bury St Edmunds woman has paid homage to her late husband by writing a book about his life and their time together.

Jill Crouch, of Gloucester Road, always used to say to her husband John she would write a book about him when he died. She said she ‘just knew’ he would go before her.

So when John died around three years ago, 78-year-old Jill, with the onset of Covid-19 social restrictions and nothing to do during multiple lockdowns, set to writing the 402-page book she has called Ring of Wrath.

“It is a story of my husband’s life, the family are in it, and it just goes from where we were born right through to our and his family and my family and then when we get together when I was 15 and when we got married,” Jill said.

“It’s just the story of how we came together and our experiences over our 60 years.”

The book covers many of John’s anecdotes and a series of mysterious tales, some of which include John being caught with pheasants after poaching.

The book explores some darker elements as well.

Jill said: “When we were younger, he (John) used to tell me about his life before I met him and I kept them all in my head.

"And when he was in a wheelchair he used to tell people the stories so I sort of remembered all the tales about his life and wrote them down.”

The book also covers wider and darker themes as well.

“It’s all about bad luck and good luck,” Jill said, adding: “Beneath it all it will emerge that what seems to be bad luck has a more disquieting explanation.

"You might take it as a bit far-fetched at times but it is the absolute truth.”
