Woman from Risby near Bury St Edmunds to tackle London Marathon for Sarcoma UK
A woman from Risby, near Bury St Edmunds, is to tackle the London Marathon all to raise money for charity.
Lisa Lumley will run her second marathon on April 23 in aid of Sarcoma UK, a charity close to her heart.
Lisa’s husband Steve is 15 years clear from having Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
She said: “Thankfully Steve was diagnosed and treated readily, for which I will be eternally grateful. There are, however, other types of cancer that are harder to diagnose and treat, sarcoma (bone and soft tissue cancer) being one of the hardest.”
Lisa is dedicating mile nine to family friend Ali Barker, who is nine years cancer free. Mile 16 will be dedicated to Isobel (Izzy) Sheppard who would have turned 16 in April. Izzy was diagnosed with sarcoma aged 12 and underwent chemotherapy and a full leg amputation.
In October 2022, Izzy unexpectedly suffered a brain bleed, and was told the cancer had returned in her brain, lungs, kidney, and adrenal gland. Izzy passed away on December 14 of last year 2022 aged 15 years.
Lisa has already raised over £4,000. To donate to her Justgiving page, see here.
Sarcomas are uncommon cancers that can affect any part of your body.
A key symptom of sarcoma is a lump that gets bigger quickly. Most people are diagnosed when their lump is about the size of a baked bean tin. There are many different types of sarcomas, soft tissue sarcomas and bone sarcomas.
They can affect the arms, legs, and torso, but can also appear in the stomach, intestines, abdomen, and internal reproductive organs. Sarcoma is very rare, making up less than two per cent of all cancers diagnosed in the UK each year.
