Stage One of The Women's Tour was suspended temporarily this afternoon after a crash involving a police motorcyclist.

The planned route took cyclists from Colchester to Bury St Edmunds via Wherstead, Capel St Mary, Stowmarket and Lavenham, among other villages.

However, shortly after 2.05pm, the race was stopped just before Hitcham to allow for medical services to attend the incident ahead of the race route.

A police motorcyclist and another vehicle crashed on the B1115 at Hitcham. The officer injured their leg and shoulder in the incident and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said The Event Medical Team dealt with the incident without intervention from ambulance services.

The race restarted at 3.10pm with a 1.5km neutralised section. The race situation, which saw Danni Shrosbree who is riding for CAMS Basso Racing in the lead, will be re-established.

Cyclists will now ride through Chelsworth, Brent Eleigh, Lavenham, Cockfield, Bradfield St Clare and Great Whelnetham and will finish on Angel Hill in Bury.

A spokesperson for the race said the officer has since been discharged from hospital.
