Work on Bury St Edmunds David Lloyd leisure centre well under way at Marham Park

Work is well under way on a £20 million new leisure centre on the edge of Bury St Edmunds which will create more than 75 jobs.

The David Lloyd facility, off Sandlands Drive on the Marham Park estate, is due to open this year.

Planning permission for the leisure centre on the 2.01 hectare site was approved in July.

The proposals included a three court tennis inflatable air-dome enclosure, three padel courts, a multi-use court and a Battle Box facility.

For swimming, there would be a five lane, 20m pool inside; a 400/800mm deep learner pool, an outdoor leisure pool and an outdoor children's splash play zone.

Other features listed were a three court sports hall, 100 to 120 station gym, four studio spaces for spin, blaze, high impact as well as mind and body studios, a children's soft play and activity space.

The plans featured 225 car parking spaces and 20 cycle spaces.

In September, developer Countryside announced the completion of the sale of the land to David Lloyd Leisure.

At the time, Martin Leach, managing director at Vistry Major Projects, said: “We are very excited to be welcoming David Lloyd Clubs to Marham Park.

“The start of work on-site marks a major milestone and will significantly improve the health and wellness facilities and wider offering at the development.
