A tournament held in memory of pool player Ray Thorpe raised hundreds of pounds for charity at the end of last month.

Thorpe — who played for Newmarket League team Studlands Sports and Social Club for 17 years — lost his battle with cancer last November.

The Ray Thorpe Memorial Shield, which raised £422 for St Nicholas’ Hospice in Bury St Edmunds, was won by Chris Butcher, with Pat Cronin the runner-up.

Scott Davidson, captain of the Studlands A Pool Team, said: “The event was the best way we could think of to pay tribute to Ray, who we all dearly miss.”

The event was sponsored by Manchetts, Heath Road Garage, Fingerprint Digital, Sean Wiseman Garage, Studlands Sports and Social Club and Domino’s Pizza.

Thorpe lived in Red Lodge until his death and work for Manchetts as a mechanic for many years.
