Ipswich Town youngster Ashton Boswell scores twice in Felixstowe & Walton United’s win at Heybridge Swifts while two Ryan Swift goals earns Mildenhall Town victory at Haringey Borough
Felixstowe & Walton United returned to the top of the Isthmian League North Division on an afternoon dominated by frost-enforced postponements.
On Tuesday night the Seasiders lost their place at the summit when they were beaten 2-0 at Bury Town, who subsequently opened up a three-point lead for themselves.
However, with Bury’s home game against Maldon & Tiptree one of six games in the division to be called off, Felixstowe took full advantage with a 2-0 victory at Heybridge Swifts.
And it proved to be a particularly memorable afternoon for Ashton Boswell, who scored both goals at the First Call Community Stadium on his first start for Felixstowe following his loan move from Ipswich Town earlier in the week.
Boswell broke the deadlock in the 38th minute with a header and he duly doubled his and the visitors’ tally midway through the second half after a goalmouth scramble.
The win has moved Stuart Boardley’s men above Bury on goal difference, although Cole Skuse’s Blues will have the chance to regain top spot on Tuesday night when they travel to Brentwood Town (7.45pm).
Meanwhile, Mildenhall Town also recorded an important victory to put more daylight between themselves and the North Division’s relegation zone.
On Tuesday night Phil Weavers’ team moved six points clear of the bottom four courtesy of their 1-0 win at the expense of Maldon.
And that gap has now swollen to nine points after they ran out 2-1 winners in front of a crowd of more than 400 away at struggling Haringey Borough.
Ryan Swift had only scored twice for Mildenhall following his arrival in the summer, but he doubled his return for the campaign today with both goals in London.
The striker opened the scoring after just four minutes at the CVS Stadium Coles Park and while Sydney Ibie equalised for Haringey within two minutes, Swift struck again in the 28th minute to wrap up all three points.
Mildenhall, who are up to 14th, will travel to face 17th-placed Gorleston in a rearranged fixture on Wednesday night (7.45pm).
Elsewhere, in the Thurlow Nunn League First Division North, Needham Market Reserves fought back from being two goals down to draw 2-2 with Harwich & Parkeston at a foggy Bloomfields.
