Norwich City supporter Edward Seaman wants Josh Sargent to retain his starting place despite Teemu Pukki's likely return against Millwall
The palpable sense of relief that greeted the final whistle at Carrow Road on Tuesday night told its own story.
After a difficult start, the Canaries finally picked up their first win of the campaign at the expense of a Huddersfield Town side still looking to find its feet after play-off heartbreak in May.
Despite making hard work of the final 15 minutes, the Canaries were good value for the three points.
Dean Smith’s side came flying out of the blocks, racing into a two-goal lead thanks to Josh Sargent and the impressive Danel Sinani.
I was particularly pleased for Sargent, who has endured a tough time since joining the club for a fee of around £8m a year ago. It’s been hard not to feel sorry for the 22-year-old, often the subject of ridicule from City fans.
For much of his time at Carrow Road, the striker has been asked to play wide right – a role he clearly doesn’t feel comfortable with, nor have the creativity for.
But with Teemu Pukki absent through injury, the USA international was given a rare opportunity to lead the line and grabbed the chance with both hands.
Sargent was a constant thorn in the Terriers’ side, opening the scoring with an imperious header, as well as playing a key role in the dismissal of Tom Lees.
With Pukki set to return for the visit of Millwall, it leaves Smith with a welcome headache. We all know what Pukki brings to the party, but for me Sargent deserves to keep his place in the starting line-up.
He has the added incentive of knowing a good run of form could see him recalled to the USA squad just in time for the World Cup. Whoever features, we need to keep moving in an upward trajectory.
The win against Huddersfield was an important first step – particularly from a psychological perspective. Back-to-back victories could be the watershed moment we are looking for.
