Mildenhall Town manager Phil Weavers believes performances have deserved more Isthmian League North Division points
Mildenhall Town boss Phil Weavers believes that his side’s last three outings have summed up their season to date.
After playing out a 1-1 draw at Sporting Bengal United on December 21, Mildenhall held high-flying Bury Town to a 0-0 draw on Boxing Day.
And that was followed on Saturday by another draw as their trip to Grays Athletic ended level at a goal apiece.
That trio of results has kept Weavers’ men three points above the Isthmian League North Division relegation zone, but he feels that the gap should be greater.
“I think frustration is the over-riding emotion after those games,” he said. “We were disappointed not to win at Sporting Bengal because they’re a team in and around us and they’re on a bad run.
“We also dominated for an hour at Grays and had chances to extend the lead, but they did get on top in the last 20 minutes.
“And the Bury game was tough, as we expected. They dominated the game and were probably the only side that were going to win it, so we were happy to come out of that one with a point. They’re the best side we’ve played this season.
“There’s mixed emotions after those games, but it’s probably mainly frustration.
“The performances haven’t always been rewarded with the points we deserve this season, but we’ve just got to keep at it.”
The weekend’s draw at Grays was notable for Samuel Adetiba’s first goal in Mildenhall colours.
The attacker joined the club in November and having gone close on a handful of occasions during his first five appearances, he broke his duck at Chadfields.
And Weavers is hopeful that it marks the start of a positive run in front of goal for the former Heybridge Swifts player.
“Sam was someone we scouted when we were struggling with injuries and unavailability,” added Weavers.
“He’s a fantastic lad. He travels a fair distance to play for us and sometimes that can dictate the type of player you bring in, but he goes out of his way to be part of the group and he really buys into what we want from him as a management team.
“He wants to have a good crack at this level and he’s done really well for us. He’s been close a few times since joining us to scoring but now he’s got one, hopefully that will lead to him scoring a few more over the coming weeks.”
After tomorrow’s clash at Cambridge City, Mildenhall will renew their rivalry with Newmarket Town for the first time since the two teams were promoted last season.
While Mildenhall were crowned Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division champions, Newmarket had the upper hand in the head-to-head meetings. The Jockeys collected four points from the two league clashes and thrashed Mildenhall 6-0 in the League Challenge Cup.
“They had our number both in terms of results and performances,” said Weavers.
“They were good value for the two wins and the draw was one that could have gone either way on the day. They were the best side we played last season by a distance.
“I’m mainly focused on Mildenhall so I don’t know too much about their season, but I’d imagine they’ve suffered in similar ways as we have as a newly-promoted team.
“We know they’re a good side and we know they’re going to be up for it – we’ll have to match that first of all.
“It’s the same with any game – if we can execute performances then we’ll always have a chance of picking up a decent result.”
Following the clash with Newmarket, Mildenhall will host Maldon & Tiptree in a rearranged encounter on Tuesday (7.45pm).
