Thetford Town manager Matt Morton calls on his side to cut out the costly errors
Poor visibility may have called off Tuesday night’s encounter, but player-manager Matt Morton is clear on where his Thetford Town side have been going wrong so far this season.
With five defeats from five, the Brecklanders currently sit bottom of the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division on goal difference.
However, a quick scan of their results shows Morton’s men are not getting badly beaten, suggesting that a turnaround in form is not beyond them.
Speaking after the home encounter with Mildenhall Town was abandoned in the 40th minute due to fog with the scoreline locked at a goal apiece, Morton admitted his team are being punished for mistakes in the ‘little moments’ of games.
“It’s been very frustrating. We know what has been going wrong and it’s not like we need to bring in this particular player or change a certain tactic,” he said.
“It’s individual errors in the little moments that are costing us right now.
“We’ve been getting into good positions and missing chances, or playing excellently for a half and then being flat in the other.
“At Clacton on Saturday (3-2 defeat) we started like a house on fire. We weren’t helped by a poor decision from the referee or an uncharacteristic error from Gammo (Frank Gammon, goalkeeper). He’s been great since he came in and these things happen.
“But we went in at half-time 2-2 and the message was to just repeat that performance in the second half, but it didn’t happen.
“The winner has come from our corner. The same player has won two 50/50 tackles, the third runner has got in unmarked and cut the ball back for someone to produce a good finish. But why was their desire to score a winner greater than ours to stop them doing it?
“It’s those little moments. There is no science behind it, it’s a mental thing.
“I’ve no problem whatsoever with the players we have.
“We’ve got a good balance of youth and experience. I’m happy on paper but we need to transfer that to the grass.”
Morton felt his side were playing well when the referee decided to halt proceedings on Tuesday.
Thetford’s Liam Hemming had just cancelled out Tanner Call’s opener, but he felt calling the game off was the right decision.
“I just about saw Liam’s goal,” said Morton, who was playing at centre-back alongside Nathan Clarke.
“The fog was worse across the pitch than it was between the two goals.
“There was a moment when their right-back has played a long ball across the pitch and as soon as it left his foot, I didn’t see the ball again until it landed.
“We couldn’t have continued like that and it was probably a nice scoreline for the referee to make the decision.”
Thetford now have a two-week break before returning to action at Woodbridge Town on October 17 (3pm).
