Bury St Edmunds Hockey Club have another team crowned champions and another one win promotion
Bury St Edmunds Hockey Club had another tremendous weekend of results, seeing one of its teams crowned champions and another team promoted.
In addition, the Men’s II managed to drag themselves out of the relegation places in their final East Men’s League match of the season.
Bury were reliant on results elsewhere to have any chance of climbing out of the bottom two in Division 3NE. News filtered through that Sudbury II had beaten Lowestoft Railway I meaning Bury needed a draw at Newmarket I to move ahead of Railway.
However, captain Paul Whiting roused his troops into a performance that far exceeded this and Bury came out 4-1 winners – the opening goal from a thunderous Whiting strike, and further goals added by Ali English, Henry Whiley and Felix Jones.
The Men’s V closed out their unbeaten season in Division 6NE(S) with a 2-0 win away at Ipswich IV to finish the season as champions. Goals came from Ben Alberts and Andrew Swiney.
The Men’s I Division 2N title hopes ended with a 4-3 home defeat to Dereham II. Results elsewhere meant their title dream could not have happened, and they finished third to guarantee promotion.
Bury’s goals came from skipper Alex Bibby (2) and Owen Grisby.
There were mixed results for the rest of the senior teams. The Men’s III won 2-1 against Norwich Dragons IV in Division 4NE – goals coming from chairman Tim Thompson and Sam Vernon.
The Men’s IV had a 6-0 home win against IES V in Division 5NE, goals from Jasper Hulscher (2), Tom Jewers, Richard Prentice, Tony Bass and James Piercy.
Bury Men’s VI also ended their league Division 6NE(S) programme with a win, 2-1 at home to Newmarket III. Goals came from Dominic Holmes and Jude Christie.
The Men’s VII were defeated in a spirited display in the same division, going down 7-4 to IES VI. Bury’s goals came from Matt Knight, Robert Fiske, and Peter Lillistone (2).
