Free Range Campers launches in Bury St Edmunds for holiday season

A new motorhome and camper van rental firm has launched on the back of a surge in holidays in the UK.

Free Range Campers has opened in Brunel Business Court, Eastern Way, Bury St Edmunds, in time for the summer holiday season.

Business owner Andreas Bonney said: “Lockdown saw a surge in demand as people looked for a way to take a holiday away from home, whilst being able to stay within their bubble and not be reliant on accommodation.

“As someone who’s rented and owned camper vans for many years, I love the freedom they give you, yet have all your creature comforts.”

He added: “I already had a camper called Hugo which I converted from a school minibus with a much more skilled friend.

“This became the first vehicle in our fleet.”

Hugo is a spacious camper designed for outward-bound singles and couples. Also in the fleet is a smaller four-berth camper for families with young children, a compact motorhome with two beds, and a large motorhome for up to five people with three beds.

“Crucially,” Mr Bonney said, “All have a toilet and shower, so you don’t have to use the facilities of the campsite you’re staying on. It is perfect for safely staying within your bubble.”

Mr Bonney said he wanted to launch in Bury as he thought nowhere in town supplied the same offering of campers.

“I think for many businesses it’s a difficult time to start up,” he added.

“Having previously started several businesses including a coffee shop, it’s clear that Covid has been very divisive in terms of which businesses suffer the most, and which thrived.

“Sadly, not many have thrived and those that have suffered are on the high street, which was already under pressure from web-based suppliers.

“But I think whilst much of the non-food retail sector will continue to feel the pinch, food-based outlets are going to have an excellent summer, provided we don’t have another lockdown. The same goes for hotels, B&Bs, campsites and, hopefully, camper rentals.”

Hire prices range from £64 to £150 per night depending on season, size of vehicle and length of rental.

Mr Bonney said: “The aim for this year is just to survive and recover capital. Next year I’m hoping to build on that as customers renting from us this year book in advance for next year.”
