Luna House Boutique set to open in Bury St Edmunds

Four women are combining their expertise to launch a vintage shop in a busy town centre space.

Luna House Boutique is set to open on Monday, April 12, in Buttermarket, Bury St Edmunds, right in time for the lift of retail restrictions.

The shop will offer antique furniture, homeware, jewellery, and original vintage clothing.

Anne Hawes, one of the four to go into business, said the emphasis was on ‘pre-loved’ products deserving a home.

“We feel it is a good time to open as we will be coming out of lockdown,” she said.

“People are becoming more interested in sustainable living, and the shop is a good example of that. It feels the right time to open if we are to meet that desire.

“I think there is a thirst for second hand and well designed products.”

Mrs Hawes, who lives outside Newmarket, is experienced in antique retail and is joined by three others also in the know: Gill Beeson, Amanda Sherring and Helen Copeland.

The four know each other from previous retail ventures.

The quality secondhand items are all dating from the 20th century, with even 80s and 90s products now considered vintage.

Mrs Hawes said: “We are excited and a little bit nervous to be opening. We have been practically living in the shop since January.”

Luna House already has a significant following on Facebook - where team members have shared pictures of some of the furniture, cabinets, and decorations on offer.

Clothes made by Helen will also be on offer, while the space of the shop has also allowed them to open a men’s section, with vintage vinyl and books also being sold.

Mrs Hawes lists custom jewellery and recycled lamps among her favourite items on sale.

She said: “We have an emphasis on the sustainable.

“The customers will be able to say they have saved a product from landfill.”

“People will always say it is heaving in the town centre, whereas I know in St John’s Street you never get the same footfall,” she said of the decision to open in Buttermarket.

“It is a bit of a risk, but we think it could be one that pays off. It is a big shop with lots of space.

“We are hoping for the best.”
