In 1886, the borough council purchased 112 acres of land at West Stow from the Culford Estates. This trench was part of a plan to replace the sewage works built in Bell Meadow, Bury St Edmunds, and relocate down- stream of the town.

Eight trustees of the Ixworth Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, in Stowmarket Road, were entrusted to find land and build this chapel in The High Street.
