A former Ipswich Town football player will see his dream come true as he prepares to open his first gym.

George McCallum, 31, is gearing up to open ATP Fitness in the award-winning Beach Street complex in Micklegate Road, Felixstowe, next month.

Although the official opening date is yet to be confirmed, George hopes to welcome his first clients from mid-June.

“I’m nervous but also extremely excited to have something that’s mine,” he said. “I’ve been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and I had the aspiration to set up my own gym.

“Obviously there are elements of risk but hopefully calculated ones that will pay off in my favour in a couple of years’ time.”

George has been a personal trainer in the East Suffolk area for almost a decade.

He first starting coaching from the David Lloyd gym, in Ipswich, before becoming self-employed about five years ago.

However, George’s love for sports began when he started playing football for Ipswich Town at the age of eight.

Unfortunately, injury forced George to step back from club.

“I played for Ipswich Town until I got a bad injury at around the age of 16,” he said. “I got released from the club, which broke my heart.

“I got injured at school and I tore all the ligaments in the back of my right knee, which required surgery. I lost all my confidence.

“It wasn’t until my mum introduced me to the leisure centre in Felixstowe, which is where I got the bug for fitness again.

“I then started to work for David Lloyd in Ipswich and from there it escalated.”

Beach Street is not unfamiliar to George, who has been running weekly bootcamp classes at the site for the last 18 months.

Now final preparations are under way for the site’s first gym, which will be open between 6am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday.

George added: “I grew up in Felixstowe, so it will be great if I can give back to the community.

“Beach Street is the place to be. It’s a great communal space where people can socialise and I think adding the fitness element will really complement the site.”
