Pictures reveal what Felixstowe's new seafront Ferris wheel could look like if East Suffolk Council gives project its backing

A huge new Ferris wheel will give day trippers stunning views across Felixstowe and the North Sea if council planners give the project their backing.

Proposals have been submitted to East Suffolk Council to put up the 34 metre tall wheel on the Promenade at the popular seaside town.

If Paul Hedges's plans are approved the wheel, which will have 24 gondolas to carry six people each, will be erected near where Sea Road meets Arwela Road and Manwick Road on a seasonal between February and October. Over the winter the wheel would be removed for cleaning and refurbishment.

And as part of the proposals a kiosk will be built at the land, alongside a raised seating area to attract passing trade.

In the design and access statement submitted to the local planning authority, architects from A&P Designs have hailed it as a "new and exciting attraction to the sea front, which would increase visitor numbers to the area, creating employment for locals and additional income for local businesses".

Architects, commissioned by Mr Hedges's Observation Attractions Company Ltd, said in the document : "The town itself is reliant to an extent on its tourism industry and has not benefited from the media exposure some east coast seaside towns receive.

"Therefore the applicant together with additional local tradesman who have invested in this area over many years, in cooperation with the local tourism board, are keen to increase the visibility of this very pretty, less commercialised, seaside resort, to take full advantage of the increasing popularity in staycations within the UK and therefore boost the local economy."

They added: "It is felt that this attraction would provide a major focal point for visitors allowing viewpoints across the beach which was awarded a Blue Flag for the first time, and the mouth of the River Orwell and out over the port."

Mr Hedge's already operates a Ferris wheel exactly the same as the proposed for Felixstowe at Clacton Pavilion in Essex.
