Spa Pavilion Theatre in Felixstowe reacts after receiving more than 200 comments regarding Katie Hopkins’ scheduled show next year
A Felixstowe theatre has stated that it will not condone any form of hate speech after receiving more than 200 comments regarding Katie Hopkins' scheduled show.
The 49-year-old found fame after appearing on The Apprentice in 2007 and has since written columns for national newspapers, including The Sun and MailOnline.
However, Katie’s social media presence and views on matters including migrants, race and UK politics have often attracted controversy.
Last month, she announced she is set to travel around the UK as part of her Batsh*t Bonkers Britain 2025 tour and is scheduled to perform at the Spa Pavilion on May 24.
However, since the venue announced the sale of tickets for her upcoming show, it has received more than 200 comments, with some residents expressing ‘disappointment’.
The theatre has put out a statement saying it will not stand for any offensive, racist or inciteful comments in its shows, and will be contacting Katie’s agent to discuss the response.
In a statement, it said Katie’s show has been one of the fastest-selling shows in quite some time, with more than 200 tickets already sold.
It added: “We thank everyone who has shared their view and we believe that there has been sufficient information provided for people to make an informed decision as to whether or not they wish to see Katie Hopkins perform live.
“It is entirely your prerogative, of course.
“We find that comedians with more controversial material (e.g. Jim Davidson / Kevin Bloody Wilson) have always sold remarkably well here in Felixstowe.
“We are an unfunded, independent venue still recovering from Covid 19 and we have more shows in our programme than ever before.
“We depend on acts to attract as many people as we can to survive and we do no stand for any offensive, racists or inciteful comments in our shows.
“Beyond that, we do no act as a censor nor can we afford to operate as one.
“We are simply trying to attract enough people to the theatre to enable it to continue surviving subsidy, against all the odds.”
Katie’s tour will run between May and July of next year. She is set to perform at 40 towns and cities around the UK.
