Suffolk singer Ed Sheeran claims both most played artist in the UK and most played track for 2021

New data has revealed Ed Sheeran was the most played artist in the UK last year.

The Framlingham-based singer topped both the most played artist and most played tracks chart, with his single 'Bad Habits' the most popular song in 2021.

It is the second time he has claimed both accolades in a single year, having previously done the double in 2017.

He is also the first artist to win the two awards, released by licensing company Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL), in separate years.

The data from PPL is compiled from exclusive UK recorded music usage and airplay data obtained by from radio stations and television channels.

PPL's data is also collated from performances and streams in locations such as offices, shops, bars, nightclubs, music venues and festivals.

Ed beat David Guetta and Dua Lipa to top spot in the most played artist category, while his hit single 'Bad Habits' surpassed 'By Your Side' by Calvin Harris and Tom Grennan to be the most played track of 2021.

Peter Leathem, chief executive officer at PPL, said: “Congratulations to Ed Sheeran for having the UK’s most played track of 2021 and being the UK’s most played artist of 2021.

"His chart-topping success over the last five years is a testament to not only the quality of his output but also the strength of UK music at a time when the global music landscape is more competitive than ever.
