Fire fears at Haverhill bank prove to be unfounded

Concerns that a fire might have started inside the Barclays Bank branch in Haverhill this morning were proved to be wrong.

Two fire appliances had rushed to the High Street building just after 8.30am after a report of a possible fire had been received.

However, all proved to be okay and the fire service declared the incident closed at 10am.

A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two appliances from Haverhill attended a commercial property at 08.37 this morning after the smell of burning was reported.

"After further inspection, it was identified that the source of the burning smell was a heating system located in the ceiling void of the property.

"No additional action was taken by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service."

The High Street was not closed at any time during the incident.
