Two Haverhill men arrested after raid by armed police officers
Armed police officers swooped on a house in Haverhill late last night and arrested two men after responding to reports that a man had been threatened with a firearm.
The incident drew a large crowd of onlookers at it unfolded in the Snowdon Court and Gloucester Road area of the town.
A police spokeswoman confirmed this morning that two men had been arrested in connection with firearm offences.
She said: "Police were called at approximately 7.45pm yesterday, Tuesday 27 August, following reports of an altercation between three men in Gloucester Road where one man was threatened.
"The suspects then left the area on foot, following which it was alleged a firearm was seen.
"A search of the area was carried out by officers, assisted by the NPAS (National Police Air Service) helicopter.
"At approximately 9.20pm, the two suspects were located at a nearby residence and arrested.
"A 27-year-old man and a 26-year-old man, both from Haverhill, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and taken to Bury Police Investigation Centre for questioning where they remain."
Eyewitness Jonathan Coe said he saw at least three armed response vehicles, one dog unit and other uniformed police officers at the scene.
The two arrested men, he said, were led out of a house in Snowdon Court by armed officers.
He added:"There were 50 to 100 people outside watching. Literally the road was blocked at one point by people watching."
