A desire to be able to spend more time with patients has led an experienced hearing health practitioner to start her own business.

Working under the name of The Audiology Expert, Keyla de Magalhaes has been based since early December at The EpiCentre, on Haverhill Research Park.

An audiologist since graduating in 2002 from the Catholic University of Petropolis, in Rio de Janerio, in her homeland of Brazil, Keyla has been living in England for 14 years, the last four of which have seen her working across Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire.

Her services include ear wax removal and the fitting of hearing aids, hearing health checks and tinnitus consultations, the latter of which is free to people aged over 50.

Having latterly been in the East Anglia region working with an independent company looking after hearing services provided at opticians, Keyla, whose CV also includes working at Charing Cross Hospital in London and for Specsavers, wanted to be able to ‘spend more time with patients’, so opened her own practice.

She said: “I recently moved to Haverhill, so I live here. I thought for me, to be more engaged with the community I thought it would be a good idea to become full-time and have my own space.

“Now I am full-time I feel I have more time to spend with my patients.”

The environment provided at The EpiCentre was also good for her patients, said Keyla.

“There is free parking. I get patients coming from Halstead and Sudbury, from all around.

“It’s very easy to park here and there’s a nice café. The waiting area is beautiful. All these experiences I think are quite positive.”

And living locally, said Keyla, now meant she could get more involved with the community.

“Coming from Brazil, it’s something I have always done. I’ve always worked within my community, it could be with the church, the youth, I’ve always been involved in the community,” she said.

“It’s something I have missed and I think by being local and working locally I will be able to get more involved in it.”

For January and February, Keyla is offering a ten per cent discount on health checks for the ears, including a hearing and pressure test.
