Haverhill churches add to the festive fun with an outdoor nativity and carol concert this weekend

Churches in Haverhill have teamed up to provide a free outdoor nativity tomorrow and a carol concert, as part of the family Christmas shopping event, tonight.

Haverhill Churches Together, the town’s Christian churches working in partnership, supported by the town council, is looking to recruit children in fancy dress as shepherds, wise men and women, animals and angels for its outdoor nativity and carols. Adults in fancy dress would be welcome too.

The nativity starts at midday on Saturday, with the first scene at Haverhill Methodist Church, in Camps Road, and then moves outside for the next scenes at the bandstand on the Recreation Ground and near the Christmas tree on Market Square.

The final scene will be in St Mary’s and the cast escorted by a VIP ‘camel’ (loaned by The Centre Stage Company) and a real donkey and carols will be sung along the route with help of the Salvation Army.

Prizes are to be given for children in appropriate fancy dress.

Photos can be taken with the children at the nativity stable on St Mary’s churchyard, prior to the final scene, while free refreshments will be provided inside the church after the play.

The organiser of the outdoor nativity and carols, the Rev Wendy Norris, from St Mary’s Church, said: “Do join us and have fun. It’s free and a great way to celebrate the start of the Christmas period.Everyone is welcome.”

Tonight, the Haverhill Silver Band, voices from the town’s combined churches and the Haverhill Singers will perform carols outside the old NatWest Bank, in High Street, at 6pm, outside Saffron Insurance at 6.30pm and in Queens Square at 7pm as part of the Haverhill Family Christmas Night.
