Dad of murdered Haverhill teen Harley Barfield takes on charity challenge for Diabetes UK in son’s name
The dad of murdered Haverhill teenager Harley Barfield is taking on a charity challenge in memory of his son.
Darryl Barfield is currently undertaking the Diabetes UK One Million Step Challenge, which takes place every year from July 1 to September 30 and tasks each participant with completing 10,000 steps every day over the three months.
He is also promoting his ongoing quest to provide five bleed control kits and the cabinets they are kept in, for Haverhill.
Darryl has already donated one bleed kit and last August It was placed in Strasbourg Square, just metres away from the car park where Harley was fatally stabbed in January 2023.
Harley died just two weeks after his 16th birthday and his killer, also 16 was sentenced to life in custody, with a minimum of 17 years to be served.
Darryl hopes to eventually raise enough money to buy four more bleed kits which would be placed at the shops on the Clements estate, the shops on the Parkway estate, near Sainsbury’s and in the town centre.
He said: “Where most people can walk 10,000 steps in one hour, it’s going to take me the best part of the day because of my bad back.”
He also pointed out that the challenge comes one year after he spent 14 days in intensive care following a suicide attempt. Already struggling following Harley’s killing, Darryl said it ‘all got too much’ after his younger brother Lee then died suddenly in June 2024.
