Lessons in history at Haverhill kids' holiday club

Almost 30 children visited Pyramid Rock in Egypt, the Holiday Club run at St Mary's Church in Haverhill last week.

And, on Friday evening the church held a Come and Sing of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat that raised £1,135 for the Cayden's Journey appeal.

The appeal is raising money to help ten-year-old Haverhill boy, Cayden Le Roy-Tickner, who is undergoing treatment for a brain tumour that has caused him to go blind.

Cayden, shown at the front of the picture above, also attended the Holiday Club.

For the Holiday Club the church was transformed with pyramids, palm trees, a camel and a sarcophagus. There was even a pharaoh and queen.

The theme followed the story of Joseph as he was sold into slavery by his brothers through to his triumphant rise to power in Egypt and his reunion with his family.

Diana Allin, who supervised the club, said: "Each day we explored the different roles of God in the story, Planner, Helper, Provider and Forgiver concluding on the Sunday with God the King.

"The children took part in a range of activities, including bowling, parachute games, singing and dancing.

They decorated t-shirts in multi-colours, made Egyptian jewellery and head dress masks, painted a Joseph model and made him a coloured coat, dream jars and dream catchers were made, and pyramids were made with marshmallows and then eaten!

"We had a visit from the town's mayor, Cllr Tony Brown who joined in the fun and took a boat up the river Nile and fought off the crocodiles.

"The children were joined on Friday by members of the Friday Café Church and then challenge was set – to wrap someone from each group as a mummy.

"We had a Club song (Copyright Scripture Union 2005) with all the actions and this sums up our week: -

"We’re gonna swim up the Nile,

"We’re gonna open the scroll,

"We’re gonna have some fun as we get to know about Joseph.

"Cause Joseph and his God made the Pyramids Rock."
