Debut London Marathon awaits duo as they aim to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust
A dad-of-four will be taking on the London Marathon on April 28 knowing that every pound he raises will go towards a cause that is very close to his heart.
Andy Gage, owner of The Firepit Company, in Helions Bumpstead, will be joined by his friend and colleague Jason André for what will be a first marathon anywhere for the duo.
They will be raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, a charity that means more
to Andy than most as his youngest child Honey, 11, and his eldest, Eden, 17, both have the condition.
Andy, who is married to Victoria, with whom he has two other children, Brooke, 13 and Reuben, 15, said: “I’ve got two children with Cystic Fibrosis and so raising funds for that is always something that I would like to support.”
Back in 2017 Andy and Jason decided they both needed to lose weight and so teamed up with personal trainer Kelly Mepham (Kelly Health & Fitness) who suggested they needed a goal
Andy, who turns 40 in June, said: “If you are working you need to have a target so she suggested a marathon and I was like ‘flipping heck, I can’t even run a mile.’
“We started training for that in September, year before last, and I had a break in the middle.
“I was ill and in hospital for a while and my wife at the same time had bowel cancer so had to have chemotherapy and an operation.
“I got seriously back into it last June and ran a half-marathon in Bedford in September and I really struggled.”
On Kelly’s advice Andy began dieting too and by the time he finished the Cambridge Half-Marathon last month he had not only shed nearly four stone since he began training, he had also knocked nearly one hour off his Bedford time.
Andy said: “I’m so much fitter and I’m fairly confident I will be able to finish London in about four hours 20 minutes, that’s my plan.”
