Quakers Lane, in Haverhill, near the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, is repaired to the delight of residents and councillor
A section of Haverhill road and bridleway described as a death trap has been repaired, leaving residents and a councillor ‘very happy’.
The top section of Quakers Lane, next to Haverhill Ex-Servicemen’s Club, and the road and bridleway that connects it to the junction of Mill Road and Recreation Road.
It comes after residents and councillor Joe Mason called for it to be repaired after an elderly woman fell and injured her knee.
Cllr Mason spearheaded the campaign with Caroline White, of the Ex-Servicemen’s Club. Ms White, who has worked at the club for six years and lived in Haverhill for more than 40 years, said she was ‘ecstatic’ with the results.
“It looks lovely now,” she said. “We have a lot of older members who come to the club to play bingo and socialise and they weren’t able to get to the club easily because of the state of the road. There were potholes everywhere and it was dangerous.
“Sometimes we’re the only people they see all week, so I’m absolutely chuffed as it had been like that for years.”
Town councillors had been pressing for a solution to the problems at Quakers Lane, but their efforts went unnoticed for several years.
Joe Mason, Haverhill town, district and county councillor, said was he was determined residents would be able to use the road without fear of injury.
He said: “For years councillors have asked for this byway to be repaired, so I am absolutely delighted this work is now completed.
“It was great to meet some of the members and I could see how much these improvements to Quakers Lane meant to them.”
Cllr Mason said the push for the works was a ‘real team effort’ and thanked Ms White and officers at West Suffolk Council and Suffolk County Council, who found the project funds.
However, he was concerned about vehicles using the road, which is meant to be for authorised vehicles only, and would push for measures to enforce this.
Suffolk Highways said it was pleased to hear the ‘great feedback’ following the repairs.
