Haverhill councillor Joe Mason’s four-year quest to see new bus stop and pathway completed pays off

More than four years after it began, a project to install a new bus stop and pathway near a GP surgery in Haverhill has been completed.

Originally initiated and funded by former county and town councillor Paula Fox in 2020 the bus stop and path is now complete in Greenfields Way, a stone’s throw from Unity Healthcare.

Cllr Joe Mason, a town, district and county councillor in Haverhill, spent four years trying to get the work completed.

He said: “Legal hurdles, land ownership complexities, design issues, and funding gaps nearly stalled progress.

“However, I was determined to see this project through, and in doing so continue Cllr Fox’s vision to improve accessibility for the community.”

A new path has been installed from Norton Road, complete with a ramped, accessible connection to the surgery, providing a safer access for everyone, particularly those with mobility challenges.

Describing the scheme as one of the ‘most challenging’ he has had as a councillor, Cllr Mason continued: “It required four years of lobbying, problem-solving, and collaboration. I am deeply grateful for the support of Suffolk County Council leader Cllr Matthew Hicks and the hard work of council officers who helped overcome the obstacles we faced.

“This truly was a collaborative effort, and it has been incredibly rewarding to see this vision come to life and benefit the community.

“Listening to residents and delivering on promises is at the heart of what we do as councillors.

“Completing this project is a significant step in building trust and demonstrating our commitment to improving the lives of our constituents.”

Residents with mobility difficulties have also highlighted the need for dropped kerbs across Greenfields Way, added Cllr Mason.

With Cllr Mason having used his highways locality budget for work in Haverhill Cangle ward, Cllr David Roach (Haverhill East and Kedington) has stepped in to fund a new pair of dropped kerbs at the bus stop, enhancing accessibility for its users.
