West Suffolk MP Nick Timothy supports residents’ bid to improve ‘hazardous’ road through Poslingford, between Haverhill and Sudbury

Residents of a small Suffolk village have gained the backing of their MP in making a call for introducing ‘urgent’ road safety improvements.

Mr Timothy met residents in Poslingford, around 10 miles either side of Haverhill and Sudbury, on Friday to hear about their campaign for improved safety in The Street, including a call for a speed notification device that also has the support of their county council representative, Cllr Bobby Bennett.

A narrow road with no pavements through the centre of the village and a blind turn contribute to a risk of vehicles colliding with pedestrians, vehicles and buildings.

Resident Jack Scott said: “It’s a hazardous village road with no pavements causing residents to face constant threat from speeding vehicles.

“Apart from illegible faded signs, nothing enforces the speed limit, creating a psychological ‘invitation’ to drive fast.

“Actioning a meaningful traffic calming strategy and deterrent is urgent before a serious injury or death."

Following the meeting, Mr Timothy said: “Poslingford is a beautiful village, and is lucky to have an active group of residents who are making the case for better safety.

“It’s far better to take action now to lessen the likelihood of accidents before they occur.

“The residents showed me the narrow and blind turn they worry about. There’s also a lack of clear signage and traffic calming measures.

“I fully support residents’ campaign for a notification device that will make clear to drivers how fast they are going while warning them to take care.

“I also back parish councils who want to take action themselves when confronted by worries about road safety.”
