Benefits of Samuel Ward Academy's new building are already being felt
A new £10 million education block that will revolutionise facilities at a Haverhill school has been hailed as “fantastic” by its headteacher.
Students at Samuel Ward Academy have begun benefitting from the new facilities, which have been funded completely by a grant from central government.
The three-storey building replaces the school’s single-storey blocks A and B, which sit at the front of the building and include the current reception area.
Andy Hunter, headteacher at Samuel Ward Academy, said: “Our new building is fantastic.
“It makes a huge difference to the day-to-day experience of attending our school.
“Previously, we were spread out across a huge space on the school site and our buildings were becoming unviable.
“But now we have this great new building which is bright and spacious, modern and well-equipped.
“It feels a lot more cohesive and more of a community.”
As well as classrooms, the new block houses the library, the SEN (special educational needs) resource base, specialist music and art rooms and media suites.
Mr Hunter also praised the efforts made by staff at the school in making the move into the new building as easy as possible.
He said: “I would also like to pay tribute to all our staff who worked so hard to move everything from the old building into the new one.
“They unpacked and got ready to teach in the space of one day, before our students returned after Easter.
“We wanted everything to be right for them on that first day and it is great that we finally have an educational building that our students deserve.”
Now the new block is completed, project managers, Wates Construction, will demolish A and B blocks and convert the area into green space, with the reception being relocated to an existing space next to the drama hall.
Funding for the work came from the Government’s Priority School Build Programme with the building providing high standards in terms of natural daylighting, acoustic performance and the internal environment.
