Events in Sawston and Duxford get the newly-formed Matt Smyth Memorial Foundation off to a great start

The first two fund-raising events held by a charity set up in the wake of a father-to-be's death have netted more than £1,500 in total.

The Matt Smyth Memorial Foundation was formed after the 25-year-old, from Parsonage Close, Duxford, died in a motorbike accident on the A1307 near Linton on August 29.

The chef, who had just started a new job at the Fox and Hounds in Steeple Bumpstead, was due to become a dad for the first time in April.

The first fund-raiser was a race night at the Greyhound in Sawston on December 22 - Matt's birthday - and raised £1,023.

An over-30s v under-30s match held by Duxford United FC on Boxing Day also raised £556 for the foundation.

Matt's family told the Echo: "We truly cannot thank everyone enough, to those taken part used their precious time and money, donated money, prizes.

"It's been truly humbling to receive such amazing support over what is a very difficult time of year for most families.

"We would like to send a special thank you to Ronnie Booth and team, Cheryl at the Greyhound in Sawston, Steve Johnson and all at Duxford Utd Football Club.

"We look forward to bringing a long list of events in 2019 for you all to enjoy."
