Plans for two new apartments at 24 Queen Street, in Haverhill, which were slammed by town council, abandoned
Plans to build two new apartments in a town centre, which were slammed by a council, have been abandoned.
Earlier this month, SuffolkNews reported Haverhill Town Council’s concerns over the Kingsfield Leasing Ltd’s proposals for the land behind 24 Queen Street.
Councillors said the project was a piecemeal development and totally inappropriate.
The authority formally objected to the application in a planning committee meeting on November 5.
A notice on West Suffolk Council’s planning portal said the plans were dropped yesterday.
Cllr Pat Hanlon, chair of Haverhill Town Council’s planning committee, said: “We note the plans have been withdrawn by the applicant.
“We raised concerns both for the impact of this proposal on neighbours but also on the quality of living for whoever might have occupied these, had they been built.
“The Town Council recognises the importance of decent accommodation for the wellbeing of residents and if an amended application is submitted we will scrutinise it fully to see our concerns have been addressed before making our comments.”
The project would have seen a two-storey building house two one-bedroom apartments on the site, which is currently used as parking.
In front of the site is a hairdressers on the ground floor and a self-contained flat above.
The new apartments would have been immediately behind this.
Before the meeting at which the council objected, Cllr Mary Martin visited the site.
She said: “It’s unbelievable that someone would think of putting a dwelling there.
“I think it’s a totally inappropriate application and it should be refused.
“Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should.”
No reason was given for the withdrawal of the plans.
