Back in 2012, despite a number of Olympic Torches appearing on eBay, Haverhill’s torch bearers planned to hold on to theirs after their stint in the relay finished.

Paralympian Caroline Maclean, 37, and Issy Gower, 13, pictured by our then photographer Helen Whitcombe, were the only two Haverhill residents among the 11 who were to carry it through the town on July 7.

Seven of the other nine were from elsewhere in the UK and two coming from China.

Before the relay had started, some torch bearers announced plans to sell them on eBay – one attracted what turned out to be a hoax bid of over £150,000, though several were selling for between £3,000 and £4,000.
