Haverhill police officers host Road Casualty Reduction Day in Market Square

An event to raise awareness about the dangers of irresponsible motorbike riding was held in Market Square, Haverhill, on Sunday.

The Road Casualty Reduction event, organised by PC Jack Oakley from the Haverhill Community Police Team, is part of Suffolk Police’s Fatal Four campaign which runs throughout July.

PC Oakley had previously highlighted the issue of individuals riding motorbikes, often dirt bikes, dangerously around town without safety equipment, MoT, or insurance.

He said: “"The event went very well and it's crucial to emphasise the safety aspect to the young people in town.

“We share their passion for motorcycling and want to support it, but safety must come first.

“By engaging with them and hosting events like this, we hope they'll pick up something that could potentially save their life."

The engagement day targeted the younger generation, aiming to educate ‘the drivers of tomorrow’ on these dangers to reduce future road deaths.

Cllr John Burns attended the event along with the Roads Armed Policing Team, Community First Responders, Red Knights Motorcycle Group and Suffolk Fire Bike.

The campaign emphasises that the majority of fatal collisions involve one or more of the Fatal Four offences: speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
