Haverhill Cangle school celebrated in new history book
A history group is celebrating the publication of its latest book which tells the story of a historic school.
Haverhill and District Local History Group held the launch for Haverhill Board Schools (The Cangle) 1877 – 1989, in the History Centre, at Haverhill Arts Centre, on Saturday.
Brian Thompson, secretary of the group, welcomed town Mayor Bruce Davidson, Cllr Pat Hanlon and John Pearson, chair of governors of the New Cangle Community Primary School.
Jacqueline Brading, headteacher of the New Cangle Primary School also loaned the group artefacts including the ceremonial trowel used to lay the foundation stone of the Board Schools in 1876, along with some slates, a school logbook and a punishment book.
Brian Thompson, secretary and treasurer of Haverhill & District Local History Group) said: "The New Cangle is very proud to have such a link to the history of the town.
"It is independent from the other primary schools that are part of the Unity Schools Partnership.
"Whilst the New Cangle enjoys its independent status, it can be difficult being a small school on its own.
"In particular it is challenging to find people willing to become Governors.
"The school currently has vacancies and would love to have more members of the Haverhill community on its governing board.
"Being a Governor is a very rewarding role; not only do they have the opportunity to see children's learning but they also have influence over key decisions about children's futures.
"If you are interested in becoming a governor at New Cangle, please give the school a call to get more details.
Copies of the book can be bought from the History Centre at Haverhill Arts Centre on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10am-noon and Saturday 10am-2pm; £6 for group members, £7 for non-members.
