Haverhill Silver Band joined a star-studded line up at a charity event organised by and featuring Griff Rhys Jones that raised more than £90,000.

The band travelled to Ipswich’s Regent Theatre on Monday, December 6 to take part in “Happy Christmas Ipswich2”, an initiative by Griff Rhys Jones, in aid of East Anglian Children’s Hospice (EACH).

The star-studded line-up, who all gave their services for free, included Stephen Fry, Griff Rhys Jones, Clive Anderson, Eddie Izzard, Ed Byrne, Johnny Vegas and Ruthie Henshall.

The audience also watched video messages from the likes of Ant and Dec, Graham Norton and Joanna Lumley reading their favourite Christmas cracker jokes.

Richard Pannell, from the band, explained more: “The band accompanied Ruthie in I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

Haverhill Silver also played various Christmas items in a grand finale where all of the cast joined in.

“This was a memorable occasion for Haverhill Silver, and they enjoyed being part of the evening which raised over £90,000 for EACH.”

The audience also watched video messages from the likes of Ant and Dec, Graham Norton and Joanna Lumley reading their favourite Christmas cracker jokes.

This has been a particularly busy week for the band.

Between December 3 and 8 some members performed four times in six days, from Haverhill’s Family Christmas Night on Friday to the Civic Carol service in St Mary’s Church on the 8th.

On December 5 the band played a joint concert with Haverhill Youth and Community Band in the arts centre.

There is now a lull until Sunday, December 19 when the band will play at the Old Independent Church, in Hamlet Road, at 8pm in the traditional Carols for All concert, joined by the choir of Haverhill Operatic Society and a guest organist.

The concert was initiated in 1975 and last year was the only time it has not taken place, due to the pandemic.
