Coupals Primary Academy in Haverhill celebrates hitting middle age
A Haverhill primary school has combined the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with its very own special birthday.
Pupils, staff and parents at Coupals Primary Academy joined together on Friday to celebrate 40 years since the school first opened –on June 6, 1982.
The celebrations were particularly special for those staff members and parents who had also been pupils at the Haverhill school during its first few years.
None more so than headteacher and ex-pupil David Maguire, who said the celebrations were poignant for many reasons.
He said “It was the first time we had invited all the parents from every year group into the school since the pandemic, so it was actually quite emotional seeing everyone on the school field. We thought it would be lovely to combine the Jubilee and our anniversary – two significant milestones this year – and we were delighted with how it all went.”
Mr Maguire first joined Coupals as a pupil in 1986 before returning as deputy headteacher in 2012 and then moving on to lead the school.
Reflecting on the school’s anniversary, he said: “All my memories of this school, as a pupil, are really positive.
“I remember all my teachers and I feel incredible privileged to now be headteacher of this school.
“Coupals has always been a special part of the local community and I think we have found the last couple of years particularly tough.
“So it has been wonderful inviting everyone in again to celebrate the Jubilee and our own big birthday.”
At the event, pupils exhibited works of Jubilee-themed art, based around the work of famous artists over the last five decades.
