Sainsbury’s Haverhill team up with Castle Manor Academy for a rewarding artistic challenge

Hundreds of jute shopping bags featuring a design by a Castle Manor Academy student have been given to customers at Sainsbury’s in Haverhill.

The bags feature a design by year 9 student Aimee Shepherd.

The store’s manager, Adam Bolder, asked the school to run a competition for students to create a picture that would then be put on 500 jute bags that were given to customers.

The competition linked in to the store’s refurbishment - for which an official launch was held last Friday.

Adam said: “This has been done to celebrate the refit and relaunch of the shop and it’s been good to involve the local community.

“Aimee’s design is absolutely perfect.”

Aimee and the five other students whose designs were judged by Sainsbury’s staff to be the best entries visited the store on the launch day to receive prizes and give out the bags

All six students received a £20 Sainsbury’s gift voucher.

The two runners-up, Victoria Yordanova and Lily-Rose Cooper-Bradford, were also able to choose a Christmas jumper or pyjamas, while Aimee also received a £50 Sainsbury’s clothing voucher. All three also received their artwork in a frame.

Castle Manor art teacher, Becky Baldwin, who opened up the competition to students taking her subject, said: “It was almost like a professional brief; a quick turnaround and getting paid at the end of it, so they were all over it.”
