'Ghostly' Haverhill locations feature in video for singer's new single
Haverhill’s forgotten spaces have been brought to life in a new music video released last week.
Sam Russo, who lives in the town, celebrated the big reveal of the video for his single, The Basement, which features on his new album –Back to the Party – last Tuesday.
The video was shot in one day at various sites and locations in Haverhill and follows Sam’s ‘ghost’ which steps out of his body and goes on a tour of the town.
“When you shoot a video somewhere you live, you know which spots to visit to get exactly the shot you want to get,” said the 35-year-old, who also works as a tutor at Hills Road Sixth Form College, in Cambridge.
“Haverhill has a lot of boarded up buildings and forgotten places and I wanted it to serve as a sort of love letter to Haverhill and the fact that a lot of its past has sort of closed down.”
Among the locations visited by the ghost in the video is the Haverhill Arts Centre, where Sam played his first gig back in 2000. The Corn Exchange and fields in the town are also featured.
“A lot of the places that we’ve included mean a lot to me and it meant a lot to shoot there,” he said.
One of those places is the skate park, at which the video begins and ends, and where Sam has spent many days throughout his life skateboarding.
The closing scene of the video, which was filmed five weeks ago, shows Sam fall off his skateboard – a fall that caused him to break his wrist for the third time.
“Someone watching it might think that the fall at the end was planned but it definitely wasn’t.,” he said. “I knew instantly that I’d broken my wrist and it still isn’t healing correctly.”
Nevertheless, Sam said he was ‘ecstatic’ with the finished video, which was premiered by New York-based music blog Brooklyn Vegan, as well as his album, which was released on March 27.
“I’m so pleased with it. It took so long to get it right and we all put so much hard work into it’s great to finally have it out there and have people actually hear it,” he said.
“This is the album I’ve always wanted to create and it sounds exactly how I wanted it to.”
