Suffolk New College in Ipswich students host live TV show Changing Tides on the topic of sustainability

A group of students from Suffolk came together to host a live TV show on the topic of sustainability.

Media hopefuls from Suffolk New College filmed a live event called Changing Tides at The Baths venue in Ipswich last Wednesday.

There, they set up a sofa and studio, and interviewed people, ranging from those involved in the venue, to local charities, to a sustainable fashion designer.

In addition, three bands from the area, Minus One, Unreliable and Tragic Something, performed a mix of cover songs and originals.

The show was presented by two performing arts students.

One host was student Rayn Brook.

She said: “This was my first experience of presenting and I enjoyed it.”

Co-presenter Blake Garnham added: “This experience will help me massively and is good for the CV.

"Who knows – Changing Tides this week, maybe The One Show in the future?"

Other media students performed a comedy sketch, while others conducted an investigation into buying clothes sustainably through charity shops.

The college said 50 people watched the show live from the studio, while others caught it live on Twitch.

A version uploaded to YouTube garnered nearly 1,000 views.

The show formed part of a unit, which would see them engage with an audience.

It was one of 13 units they would study at college.

Suffolk New College media lecturer Eli Turay helped co-ordinate this event.

He said: “We chose sustainability as it is an increasingly important topic for us all and it’s something that we all need to be aware of in the future.

“The students did a great job of researching this subject and planning and putting the show together.

“They all want to get jobs in the media in the future and this industry standard production gave them a real glimpse of what life is like in the real world.”
