Simon Dearing retires from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service after more than 46 years of service
A long-serving firefighter has retired after serving communities across the county for more than 46 years.
Simon Dearing, known as ‘Dirt 640’ by his colleagues, has retired from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service today after a career working at multiple stations including Colchester Road, Bond Street, Princes Street, Ipswich East and Eye Fire Station.
His dedication earned him numerous accolades, including the Golden, Diamond, and Platinum Jubilee Medals, the King’s Coronation Medal, the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and two Long Service Clasps for 30 and 40 years of service.
Jon Lacey, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service’s chief fire officer, said: "Simon’s contribution to Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has been nothing short of outstanding.
“His dedication, resilience, and professionalism have set a high standard for those who have had the privilege to serve alongside him.
“Beyond his expertise as a firefighter, Simon’s camaraderie, mentorship and sense of humour have made a lasting impact on his colleagues.
“We thank him for his incredible service and wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement.”
While Simon is stepping into retirement, his firefighting day are not entirely over as he will continue to serve as an on-call firefighter — ensuring his experience and expertise remain a valuable part of the service.
Cllr Steve Wiles, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for Public Protection, said: “My congratulations and well-wishes go out to Simon on his retirement.
“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for his decades of service and wish him a retirement filled with happiness, relaxation and new adventures.”
